Lesson 13 In the Science of Getting Rich: Getting into the Right Business
It will be EASIER for you to succeed in a vocation for which you already have talents in a well-developed state; - Wallace D. Wattles
This 13th chapter explores employing of our talents in the vocations that we choose or using that as a basis for choosing a career but it also explains that one can become successful in a vocation they do not have already developed talent in but only if we dedicate effort into learning more than the rudimentary skills. The four principles, among others that I want to shed light on are:
Following our natural inclination
The author explains that when we work with things and areas that we have a natural talent or a great interest in it is easy for us to excel and succeed as we are able to be more creative in our accomplishing of tasks. I wear many hats in my professional life and I would say that the areas where I really come alive when I’m in my zone is with my baking and coaching. I have always had a love for cooking but baking found me in my late 20s, in the midst of a chaotic period in my life and coaching because i’ve always loved to talk but more so enjoyed listening to others share their stories. Having a genuine passion for these areas I remember getting very disappointed when I previously would share my dreams with people and they would be like - but you need to choose one you can’t do it all. Yes they are in two completely different industries but I believe and believed that I wasn’t meant to choose one or the other so I worked on both and honed my skills in both and still do, till one day during a meditative walk I got a clear solution as to how to marry the two.
Persistence and Dedication
With this new discovery I started researching and planning as to who my ideal customer would be and what my business could look like. Not long into my research, I could see things adding up, why I had experienced some things in the past and how I could use them in my new career path. But the journey wasn’t going to be easy and has taken longer than I expected but I am not letting go off that dream as I can see that everyday I’m getting closer. The desire for this is as strong as it was 2 years ago when it all fell into place in my mind and as Wattles writes - Desire is a manifestation of power; everyday I think about the service this dream will render and I get more courage to keep on even through the setbacks and detours.
Avoiding Competition
There’ve been times when doing the same as everyone or comparing my growth to others has been very appealing but as the saying in an African proverb goes - not all fingers are the same but they all have an important role to play, so I remind myself to stick to my lane and acknowledge the progress in my life rather than competing to get to where others are or for what they have. I have been encouraged to get into events like - Great British Bakeoff but I know in my heart of hearts that the moment baking becomes a form of competition for me is the moment my passion dies, so I have said no to such suggestions and been enjoying baking with the love that I do and serving the people that I can.
Creating Value
From this I have shared recipes, tips and helped others learn some handy skills in baking and in addition to this I have also volunteered as a guest coach in a number of mentoring groups not to mention being consistent in sharing my takeaways and knowledge from personal development resources and life through my newsletter with my readers. Creating value is one of the key takeaways for me in this chapter as this is where our communities, clients and customers build their trust in us. We might not always see how we are impacting but I believe if we make this the core of our mission naturally we will also see the benefits of this as our success in that field grows. Finding the right business isn’t a matter of competing with someone in a filed that they are great at it is about finding out what we are naturally good at or what we can dedicate time and energy to learn to become great at so we can add value to our lives and the lives of others.
So, as we start a new week I would encourage us to really think about these principles above in the 13th chapter and how they can help us in our current careers or help steer us in the right direction to our success.
