Self-belief, often underestimated yet profoundly transformative, has been the driving force behind some of the most significant moments in my life. It has been my unwavering conviction in myself, the inner knowing that despite challenges and doubts, I have the strength and ability to achieve my dreams. This week on the blog I write about the power of self-belief and how to believe in yourself when no one does.

How To Believe In Yourself When No One Else Does

I remember years ago in my corporate career when I was the only black woman among my colleagues in a very male-dominated industry. Even the other women who happened to be there also had their own challenges because of the industry. There were times when my cheerleader’s voice had to be louder than anything I was listening to because I had to believe in myself, my abilities and the fact that I was worthy of being where I was.

Overcoming Doubts: Pursuing a Dream

There have been so many times when self-doubt hindered my aspirations as I dreamt of starting my own business. I was plagued by fears of failure and inadequacy and no matter how much my family and the external affirmed it wasn’t enough. However, one quote that changed everything for me was from Henry Ford - If you think you can or cannot either way you are right. This little line here gave me faith in my abilities and deep down, I held onto a glimmer of belief in what I was capable of. Holding on to this belief, I took the leap and launched my venture. It has been a rollercoaster ride of challenges and setbacks, but what has propelled me forward so far is the belief I have in myself. Today, as I reflect on how far I have come and how much I have learnt, I am reminded of the power of believing in oneself against all odds.

Rising from Adversity: Finding Strength Within

One other thing I have learnt is that life's challenges often test our resolve, but it is in these moments that self-belief shines brightest. When I recently moved home it was with the most incredible hope to start over in grand style but as fate will have it things haven’t gone to plan. Despite the overwhelming odds, I refused to succumb to despair and believe that each step forward is adding up to the greater good. I have drawn on past experiences of how this similar situation was handled and with even more ammunition in the form of the right mindset and self-belief, I feel have not only emerged stronger but more resilient than ever before. This journey is teaching me that even in the darkest of times, self-belief can be a guiding light towards hope and renewal.

So, as we start the week I would like to encourage you to think of a time when you achieved something and you were extremely proud of yourself or of some distant role model or mentor who has qualities you’d like to embody and reflect on how you can start emulating these qualities.
